Cartoonists Get It Together for Earth Day

In honor of Earth Day, cartoonists syndicated by King Features Syndicate got together to come up with eco-awareness installments of their daily strips. Participants included familiar strips like “Beetle Bailey,” “Blondie,” “Dennis the Menace,” and “Zits,” as well as newer ones like “Arctic Circle,” “Retail” and “The Pajama Diaries.” And naturally, Patrick and MUTTS participated with a full week of cartoons honoring the Earth.

The New York Times highlighted the creative efforts of MUTTS in their celebration of Earth Day. Not to be out-done, USA Today also covered the story, featured Earl & Mooch on the cover of the paper, and created a gallery of all the Earth Day strips.

Patrick will be speaking to a crowd of 1,500 animal welfare professionals about the MUTTS characters and the joys of shelter pets at this year's Animal Care Expo. Convention attendees will also be treated to a Shelter Stories: Love. Guaranteed. book signing with Patrick and meet Opus cartoonist and author Berkeley Breathed.

Oprah Investigates Puppy Mills

On April 4th, Wayne Pacelle, President and CEO of The Humane Society of the United States joined Oprah Winfrey to discuss the horrors of puppy mills and the plight of shelter animals. If you didn’t catch the show you can read a recap of Oprah’s powerful expose. After the show aired, shelters around the country saw an increase in shelter adoptions. Thank you, Oprah, for educating us all, and making such a huge impact.

Starting Sunday, 4/20, Patrick will be doing a week long series of MUTTS strips celebrating the Earth.

Although April 22 is the official Earth Day, you can do your part to help the environment every day. See how your actions shape the climate by taking a quiz to determine your ecological footprint, go organic, recycle, or simply register to vote to change the leadership responsible for our environmental laws.

On April 22, participate in Earth Day events in a city near you.

Shelter Stories Gallery’s Pet of the Month - Nairobi!

Meet Nairobi!

Nairobi was abandoned in a sealed cardboard box at the Humane Society of Morgan County, West Virginia. Having recently given birth, Nairobi quickly took to being a surrogate mother to many of the shelter’s orphaned kittens. Her current guardian knew that as an adult black cat, Nairobi’s adoption chances were slim and she deserved a loving home. So that is exactly what she received! This “elegant and dignified” lady is now a cherished companion who enjoys her days lounging in the sun on a screened porch, climbing to the top of the cabinets, and hanging out with her fellow rescued felines. “Well fed and well loved.”

Shtinky’s Call to Action: Stop the Seal Hunt!

The Canadian seal hunt is the largest slaughter of marine mammals on Earth. More than one million baby seals have been killed for their fur during the past 4 years. This year, the hunt quota has been increased to 275,000 seals. Many of these seals are just under 3 months of age. Last week, HSUS VP John Grandy, who is a leading voice in the protest, sent us this baby seal photo which was just taken by renowned photographer Nigel Barker.

You can help stop this atrocity by signing a pledge to boycott seafood products in Canada until the commercial seal hunt is ended for good.

Patrick at the AWFNJ Convention

Last month, Patrick attended the Animal Welfare Federation of New Jersey’s (AWFNJ) 12th Annual Conference. Attendees from all over the country braved the wintery elements to learn how they could better help animals. In addition to making new friends, like Captain a retired greyhound (pictured), Patrick presented The Scott McVay Unity award, sponsored by The HSUS, to Dr. Karen Dashfield for her dedication to search and rescue, and acknowledged the hard work that animal welfare staff and volunteers accomplish every day.

Youth Program - Roots and Shoots

Roots & Shoots, a program of the Jane Goodall Institute, is centered on making positive change happen for our communities, animals and the environment. With tens of thousands of young people in almost 100 countries, the Roots & Shoots network branches out across the globe, connecting youth of all ages who share a common desire to help make our world a better place through community projects, special events, and global campaigns.

Youth Program - Mission: Humane

Know a young person who loves animals? Are you a high school teacher looking for a good project for the class? We have two words for you… Mission: Humane!

A program of The Humane Society of the United States, Mission: Humane gets youth actively involved in animal protection and provides resources for classroom teachers, animal sheltering professionals, and others to guide youth animal protection clubs.

For the younger set, Kind News is an excellent source of humane information for students K-6. Available as a classroom subscription, or viewed online, Kind News provides fun animal facts, classroom activity sheets and pet friendly lesson plans, and suggests ways students can help animals.

For the not-quite-adult set, Humane Teen offers helpful guidance on starting animal clubs, raising funds for animal causes, and living a cruelty free life. Teens can receive free stuff like ringtones, stickers, and rewards for participating in promoting a kinder world for animals.

March is Adopt a Rescued Guinea Pig Month! Although small, quiet pets, they are often very affectionate and sociable. Daily care includes feeding, watering, cage cleaning, exercise, and companionship. Guinea pigs may live as long as 10 years, so the decision to adopt one must be made carefully. If you decide a guinea pig like Sweet Pea (pictured) is the right addition to your household, please make adoption your first option. Contact your local shelter or rescue group to meet the guinea pigs who are waiting for homes in your area.

Meet Rain!

Brought in as a stray to The Center for Animal Health & Welfare in Easton, PA, no one came to claim this pitbull mix. That is, until a volunteer saw Rain "looking at me through the wire kennel with those soulful brown eyes, whimpering quietly". Once unwanted, now adopted! Rain possesses a cheerful enjoyment of life. Her guardians told us about soooo many of her favorite activities, we just had to list them ALL! Rain likes morning snuggles, jogging, swimming in the creek, chasing sticks, naps on the bed; sightseeing from windows; play dates; car rides; playing with her stuffed moose!; meals; a million kisses; conversation; couch snuggles; and sleeeeeeeeeep.....!

Mooch as The Big Lebowski!

In conjunction with the film's 10 year anniversary, Patrick featured a week long series of MUTTS strips in tribute to the The Big Lebowski. Featuring Mooch in his bathrobe as 'The Dude', the strips struck a chord with all fans of the cult film.
